We proudly recognise a significant milestone for Tractionel Enterprise: achieving 1.75 million Lost Time Injury (LTI) Free Hours.
In the environments we operate in — high-voltage substations, overhead line construction, OHTE works under challenging conditions, and logistics activities spanning thousands of kilometres daily — this is no small accomplishment. It is a direct reflection of the discipline, commitment, and collective effort of every individual across the business.
A Journey Built Over Time
Our safety journey began in 2008, when injury rate tracking was formally implemented under the leadership of Johan Boshoff, who placed strong emphasis on health and safety. Over the years, consistent improvement followed, supported by a growing culture of accountability and safe work practices.
This dedication led to the organisation receiving rebates from the Compensation Commissioner, a recognition of improved safety performance. Under the guidance of Danie Lubbe, formerly Finance Director and later CEO, these achievements were further built upon and strengthened.
Building on this foundation, EXCO formalised a decision to reinvest these rebates directly into our workforce through an incentive programme across projects. Today, this initiative has broadened even further, allowing wider recognition across the business.
More Than a Number
This milestone represents far more than hours worked without incidents. It reflects:
- Thousands of correct decisions made daily;
- Risks identified and managed proactively;
- Interventions made at the right time;
- A shared commitment to doing the right thing, every time.
As a business, our guiding principle has always been: “Do the right thing, at the right time, every time.” This achievement proves that we continue to live by it.
The Power of Teamwork
This success belongs to every function within Tractionel Enterprise:
- Bid & Proposal teams ensuring the right foundations;
- Procurement sourcing quality, compliant equipment;
- Finance and Logistics enabling efficient operations;
- HR and Payroll supporting and caring for our people;
- Project teams, supervisors, and subcontractors executing work safely on site;
- SHEQ teams providing critical leadership and oversight.
Safety is not the responsibility of one department — it is a collective culture, built and sustained by every individual in the organisation.
Key Milestone Highlights
- 1.75 million LTI-free hours achieved over 376 consecutive days;
- Average workforce: 418 employees (including subcontractors);
- Peak workforce: 1,375 personnel;
- LTIFR reduced from 3.96 (2008) to 0.5 today.
Why It Matters
Beyond the statistics, this achievement is personal. It represents people returning home safely, to their families, their communities, and their lives beyond work.
Systems, procedures, and compliance frameworks are critical, but they do not prevent incidents on their own. It is the actions of people that truly make the difference:
- Choosing to stop unsafe work;
- Speaking up when something is not right;
- Looking out for one another.
Recognition and Appreciation
EXCO extends its sincere appreciation to every employee and subcontractor who contributed to this milestone. As a token of recognition, awards will be presented to teams across various projects and offices, including Voltalia, Seriti, CPT061, Salvokop WP8, Head Office teams and Cape Town Office.
Moving Forward
This is a moment to celebrate, but also a reminder that safety is a continuous journey. Let us build on this strong foundation and continue strengthening a culture where safety is not an obligation, but simply part of who we are.
Well done to the entire Tractionel team — and thank you for making this possible!
