PONGOLA & ELANDSKOP BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS (BESS) FOR ESKOM

In 2024, Tractionel Enterprise embarked on two landmark projects in KwaZulu-Natal that reflect South Africa’s growing commitment to renewable energy and advanced storage solutions. At the Pongola Substation, our team undertook the full scope of works for a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plant.

This included supply, construction, erection, testing, and commissioning of the facility – a project valued at approximately R158 million. Designed by Zutari and executed in partnership with Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation, the project is being delivered over a 24-month period and marks a significant step towards strengthening the region’s grid reliability and energy efficiency.

Parallel to Pongola, we executed an equally transformative project at the Elandskop Substation. With the same scope of work, project value, and duration, the Elandskop BESS installation underscores our ability to manage large-scale, technically advanced energy projects simultaneously. Also designed by Zutari and commissioned by Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation, the facility will provide critical energy storage capacity, enabling better integration of renewable energy sources while enhancing the stability of KwaZulu-Natal’s power network.

Together, these projects not only demonstrate our technical expertise and project execution capabilities but also highlight our role in advancing South Africa’s energy future. By delivering innovative storage solutions, we contribute to a more resilient and sustainable national grid – one that is better equipped to meet the demands of tomorrow.
