MAJUBA RAIL PROJECT

MAJUBA RAIL PROJECT

The Majuba Rail Project was a component of the Eskom Road-to-Rail Initiative, with the construction of a railway line that links the Majuba power station to the main coal railway hub in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.

The 70 km corridor were the first large greenfield freight-rail infrastructure project to be undertaken in South Africa since 1986 and will be operated by State-owned Transnet Freight Rail (TFR).

Tractionel was awarded the Contract at the end of 2016 – for the construction of the:

  • 25 kV AC OHTE Railway Lines
  • 3kV DC OHTE Railway Lines
  • 11kV AC Distribution Lines
  • The first of its kind “ON THE FLY” System allowing trains to transition from the 3kV DC section of the line into the 25kV AC section of the line without stopping.
  • 3kV DC Substations (Tie – Stations)

Tractionel needed to apply “OUT OF THE BOX” construction methodologies due to the fact that all works needed to be executed from the railway tracks as access on the side of the tracks were very limited due to a large number of cuttings and embankments, as well as navigating a very tight timeframe.  The project was successfully completed and Handed-Over in December 2018.
